APASTAMBA

Apastamba born about 600B.C & died about 540 B.C.He was the author of Sulbasutra which is the most interesting from mathematical point of view. He used the mathematical concepts & rules for religious rites & also improved the rules which had been given by his predecessors. He was skilled person in the practical use of the mathematics in constructing sacrificial altars of the highest quality.

1) In the Apastamba's sulbasutra the general linear equation was solved.

2) He has given the value of square root of 2 as "Increase a unit length by its third and this third by its own fourth less the thirty-fourth part of that fourth' which means 1 + 1/3 + 1/3x4 - 1/3x4x34 which gives an answer as 577/408 which gives in decimals to nine places as 1.414215686 correct to five decimal places of the present original value 1.414213562.

3) gives the problem of squaring the circle.
